That will depend on your needs. For the best performance possible, it’s a good idea to have both. A physical ethernet connection is most useful when you need the fastest and most reliable connection.

However, a WiFi connection allows you to connect multiple devices to your network without staying physically connected to your modem/router. This is invaluable for entertainment devices and absolutely essential for offices. So if you need access to a reliable internet connection, ask us how we can help you have easy access to both wireless and ethernet connections today.

We’ll go through the whole process with you and make you aware of the benefits of both systems.

For a home network installation, you will need a fibre connection (ONT), a modem/router, a networking switch, data points and a patch panel. We will also need access to power points.

The first thing we need to test is your data cabling and data points. We need to make sure there are no wiring faults, and your wiring can handle up to 1,000Mbps. The second thing we need to do is perform a wireless audit, so we can improve the wireless coverage and speeds throughout your home.

The third thing we check is to make sure all your devices are working perfectly and are getting the highest speeds possible.

Lastly, we need to make sure you are on an internet plan that supports and actually gives you speeds of 500 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps.

Yes, our network technicians can set up a home network in a smart home. Most smart homes already have an advanced network setup. We will need to assess your network and can then make recommendations on improvements.

A wireless access points (also known as a WAP) is a professional-grade wireless booster. They require a data point to connect to the network and give the best wifi coverage.

We can install wireless access points both in your home or business. We perform a wireless survey and assessment first, so we know exactly how many access points we need to install.

If you are unhappy with your existing wifi setup, contact the Jim’s I.T team on 0800 454 654 so we can come onsite and pinpoint the problems and give you perfect and seamless wifi.

It can take a few hours to install a network depending on how complex the network is, the number of devices that need to be connected to the network, and any unique challenges that may occur.

The biggest benefits of a professional home network include faster internet speeds, better wifi coverage, ability to share printers across devices, better speeds and connectivity for all family members, and ability to run smart devices throughout your home.

There are three types of home networks.

  1. The first one is a fully wired network, where all the devices are connected via data points, back to a router and networking switch. This is good for AV equipment and gaming machines.
  2. The second one is a full wireless network, where all devices are connected via wifi. This is great for smart speakers, laptops, iPhones, iPads etc.
  3. The third is a hybrid network that uses both wired and wireless networks. An example may be using wireless access points that are hard wired but are able to dramatically improve wifi coverage by leveraging the wired network.

In simple terms a modem connects your home network to the internet. A router manages your internet network, and internet traffic. And a networking switch allows data to move between all your devices.

No, Jim’s I.T does not recommend powerline adapters as they can be unreliable and drop out.

We will only use powerline adapters if there is no alternative, or no data points, or no ability to install data points.

We will need to come onsite to assess the granny flat and also assess the internet and network in the main house. Depending on a number of factors, we may look at using a Point to Point wifi link, installing a data point, or using a powerline adapter. After our onsite assessment, we will give you our recommendations.
